Arts and Crafts frames were nicer and more detailed than a standard frame.  They often had hand chisled designs at the corners, were coated with gesso and then painted usually a metalic like gold, silver and often shades of copper and bronze.

A very popular design was the "pie crust frame" made by hand working a stiffer gesso around the corners like an apple pie crust.  This was so popular on photos by Edward Curtis that some know it as the Curtis Frame, but I have read he preferred wide flat dark wood frames with no border or mat showing.
